I Quit: To Follow My Dream of Becoming a Writer

“I Quit” is an ongoing series of posts where women share the reasons for leaving their jobs. The series was started in 2021 during the pandemic.

As Told to SaveYourSelf.biz

Let’s face it, I was tired of juggling two worlds—one that was unfulfilling and the other I truly enjoyed. I had spent more than a decade working in government service for different agencies. I had respect for the duties and the offices I worked for, but I knew I wouldn’t be a lifer.

Two things made me toss aside my career and change direction. First, I had always dabbled in writing and I could never find enough time to click away at my laptop. Then, I was coming up on 40 and all that goes with hitting that milestone. I knew I wanted to leave my government job to write full time.

For my 40th birthday, I had a big blow-out party to celebrate. In truth, it was part birthday party, part retirement celebration. Within a week, I submitted my resignation and dedicated my time to writing.

Since then, I have written two books, several short stories and I have been a guest columnist for various websites and publications. I have served on panels and I have taken on speaking engagements.

I quit to become a full-time writer, and I have done just that.
